Understanding Sunburn and Effective Aftercare
Understanding Sunburn and Effective Aftercare
Sunburn is a common issue, especially during the summer months when the lure of sunny days and outdoor activities is irresistible. While a sun-kissed glow might be a coveted look, the reality of sunburn can be quite painful and damaging. Understanding sunburn and knowing how to care for your skin afterward is essential for maintaining healthy skin and preventing long-term damage. We have some of our tried, and true Oak & Tonic organic favourites as well as Eminence skincare to take the sting out of your recovery!
What is Sunburn? : UVA and UVB Rays
Sunburns are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Two types of UV rays affect the skin:
- UVA Rays: These rays penetrate deep into the skin and are primarily responsible for skin aging and long-term damage. UVA rays can cause wrinkles, and age spots, and can increase the risk of skin cancer.
- UVB Rays: These rays affect the outer layer of the skin and are the main cause of sunburn. UVB rays can damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancer.
Both UVA and UVB rays can contribute to immediate sunburn and long-term skin damage, making it crucial to protect and care for your skin after sun exposure.
The Impact of Sunburn on Skin Aging and Damage
Repeated sunburns can lead to:
- Premature Aging: UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and loss of elasticity.
- Hyperpigmentation: Sunburns can cause uneven skin tone and dark spots.
- Permanent Skin Damage: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to DNA damage in skin cells, increasing the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
How to Soothe and Heal Sunburned Skin
Proper care can help soothe sunburned skin and minimize damage. Here are some steps to follow:
- Cool the Skin: Take a cool (not cold) bath or shower to help reduce the heat. Apply cool, damp cloths to the sunburned areas.
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to help your skin recover and prevent dehydration.
- Moisturize: Use a gentle moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and promote healing.
